How We Choose

Every “best of” list implies a promise: that someone did real work to earn the word best. This page is that work, written down. It is linked from every buying guide we publish so you can judge our process before you trust our picks.

The research pipeline

Each guide begins the same way, regardless of category:

  1. Map the category. We identify the full competitive field — typically 25 to 60 candidate products across our retail partners and beyond — not just the bestsellers an algorithm surfaces.
  2. Establish what quality means here. Every category has objective markers of quality. For seating it is frame construction, suspension, cushion fill, and upholstery grade. For rugs it is fiber, knot density or weave, and finishing. We define these criteria first, openly, in each guide’s “How to Choose” section.
  3. Evaluate against the criteria. We assess each candidate on construction and materials (from manufacturer documentation and spec sheets), real-world performance (aggregated owner experiences across retailer reviews, forums, and communities — weighted toward long-term ownership reports), value (what the price buys relative to peers), and service (delivery, warranty, and how the brand behaves when something goes wrong).
  4. Go hands-on where we can. We own some of what we recommend, photograph it, and live with it. We evaluate more of it in showrooms and stores. We are explicit in every guide about which level applies — see the experience key below.
  5. Decide, and say why. Every pick carries a clear rationale, honest drawbacks, and a statement of who it is and is not for. If a famous product doesn’t make the list, the omission is deliberate.

The experience key

Each product assessment on Decoralot reflects one of three levels, and our guides tell you which:

  • Owned & lived with — we purchased it, photographed it, and use it. The deepest level of assessment.
  • Evaluated in person — we examined it in a showroom or store: sat in it, handled the materials, inspected the construction visible to a careful buyer.
  • Research-based — assessed through manufacturer specifications, materials analysis, and a structured review of long-term owner experiences. Most of any large category is necessarily evaluated this way, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

Our rating scale

Where we publish a rating, it is ours — a single editorial judgment on a 5-point scale, not an average of retailer stars:

  • 5.0 — Exceptional. Best-in-class construction and design; worth a waiting list.
  • 4.5 — Excellent. A confident recommendation with minor trade-offs.
  • 4.0 — Very good. Strong, with caveats we spell out.
  • 3.5 — Good with reservations. Right for specific situations only.
  • 3.0 and below — Not recommended at its price; we say what to buy instead.

We only attach ratings where our evaluation supports one. Roundup entries without a numerical rating carry a written verdict instead.

What we never do

  • Accept payment, free products with strings attached, or any consideration in exchange for placement, ranking, or favorable coverage.
  • Let a commission rate decide between two products. Merit decides; the disclosure covers the rest.
  • Imply hands-on testing that did not occur, or publish ratings we cannot stand behind.
  • Recommend a product we would not recommend to a friend spending their own money.

Keeping guides honest over time

Luxury inventory changes — fabrics are discontinued, construction quietly cheapens, prices move. Our product modules pull current pricing and availability automatically from our retail partners, and every guide is re-reviewed on a recurring schedule, with its last-updated date displayed. If a pick no longer deserves its place, it loses it.
