With candles, wax and wick determine quality. Natural waxes — soy, coconut, or beeswax — burn cleaner and more evenly than paraffin, and a well-made candle has a wick (or wicks) sized to melt the whole surface, avoiding the tunneling that wastes cheap candles. Beyond the burn, a luxury candle’s vessel is a piece of décor in its own right, and the best ones are worth keeping and repurposing once emptied. For continuous, flame-free scent, a reed diffuser works well in entryways and bathrooms. The designer approach is to layer fragrance intentionally — a warmer, richer scent in living spaces, something cleaner in a kitchen or bath — and to keep it subtle rather than overwhelming.
