A rug that’s the wrong size can undo an otherwise perfect room — size is the detail that most often separates a designed space from an amateur one.
Shopping for rugs by size solves the most common and most costly rug mistake: buying too small. A rug that floats undersized in the middle of a room pulls the furniture inward and makes the whole space feel cramped and unfinished. The rules are simple once you know them. In a living room, aim for a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every sofa and chair sit on it — an 8×10 or 9×12 for most rooms, larger for open-plan spaces. In a dining room, measure your table and add at least four feet to each dimension so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed lets you step onto softness, or use runners on either side. When in doubt, size up — a slightly-too-large rug almost always looks more intentional and more expensive than one that’s slightly too small.
